FEAST 05 on January 27, 2013

feast 05 TORONTO
CALL FOR PROPOSALS
FEAST (Funding Engaging Actions with Sustainable Tactics) Toronto is a series of community dinners and micro-funding events. During each dinner, artists, designers and groups are invited to present proposals for art- or design-based projects. Everyone attending the dinner votes on which project they would like to fund, and the project with the most votes is given a grant from the money raised from the ticket sales. The grant winner(s) will be invited back to the next FEAST to present their completed project.
We are looking for proposals for the next FEAST, edition 05, taking place on Sunday, January 27, 2012, 6-10pm, at XPACE Cultural Centre (our new location) 303 Lansdowne Avenue, Toronto.
FEAST 05 proposals should include:
A Project Summary (1), and the answers to the following questions:
(2) How will you use funding to realize your project?
(3) Why is this project critical to the FEAST community (e.g. why would the FEAST community be interested in supporting your project)?
(4) The names and contact information for all of your presenters
IMPORTANT! You must be able to attend the FEAST event on January 27th in order to apply.  Project presentations are given in-person by the presenters to the gathered guests over dinner, and then everyone gets to vote on which project they would like to fund.  The money raised from the dinner (estimated at $700+) will go to fund the project with the most votes.  We will also have a separate student grant of $300 donated by XPACE Cultural Centre.
Each section of the proposal (1-4) should be no longer than 100 words.  Remember these will be short presentations, so keep it brief and to the point!  In order to be considered for FEAST funding, you must be able to attend the event. Tickets for this locally- sourced, vegetarian dinner will be $20-30, and $10 for students.
+ Proposals are due by Monday, January 7, 2013.
+ Email your complete proposals to info@feast-toronto.com  with the subject line: FEAST 05 Submission. Please indicate clearly on your proposal if you are applying for the student grant.

Melissa Luk's winning FEAST 04 student proposal, asserts that comics are the best of all possible worlds. "It is simultaneously art and literature, something that moves you with words and feeds your eyes. They can make you feel sad, happy, entertain, be insightful, visually charm and confuse, communicate and educate. I would like to propose to FEAST a publication of a 17" x 23" sized, double-sided newspaper sheet of comics from 12 Toronto artist making these exact comics today."

FEAST 04 -- grant winners

Congrats to Zach Pearl, who won the FEAST Project Grant (of $776), and Melissa Luk, who won the $300 FEAST student grant sponsored by XPACE.

Zach's project, WreckingBallTO, is "a website that will facilitate the free trade of supplies and resources between arts organizations in Toronto and the GTA. This would be a free service, both to join and to use, wherein the primary goal would be to provide an accessible and democratic means for local galleries, artist-run centres, theatres and arts administrators to connect and notify one another of their operational wants and needs. This is intended to encourage the Toronto arts community to foster stronger bonds and awareness amongst themselves, and also to initiate an alternative economic model for acquiring necessary exhibition and event supplies that circumvents the increasingly bureaucratic federal grant system."

What it is:

FEAST (Funding Engaging Actions with Sustainable Tactics) Toronto is a series of community dinners and micro-funding events. The ticket cost for the locally-sourced, vegetarian dinner is a sliding scale of $20-30 (and $10 for students with valid student ID).

FEAST works on the basis that the more that people can share, the larger the grants we can collectively provide. Since our first FEAST, we’ve funded five projects with almost $3000. Toronto’s FEAST is in its infancy.  With your support we hope to see this event continue to grow.

How it works:

  2. Enjoy dinner and conversation with your friends and community
  3. Over the course of dinner people present project proposals for your consideration
  4. Everyone votes for which project they would like to fund
  5. The project with the most votes is funded from the money raised from ticket sales

Tickets are first come, first serve so get your tickets now!

Grab a drink of the Café and mosey on up to the second floor, where the Gladstone Hotel will host The Toronto Love Sauna.

The Toronto Love Sauna is a public installation that transforms a room at the Gladstone into a community-accessible sauna for the 2012 Valentine's Day.  Based on the theme of winter solace, the project stems from a reaction to current sauna and bathhouse practices that exist in North America under segregated circumstances, as well a desire to bring Torontonians together during the isolated winter season. The goal is to create an authentic sauna experience through the use of electric heat sources and cedar, supplemented by media elements such as sound and light. The Toronto Sauna Project will offer a warm retreat, enticing the local community into a comfortable space that is all at once relaxing, reflective, and fun.

The installation will be in operation during from 5pm on Friday, February 10th until 8pm on Sunday, February 12th, and by appointment on Valentine's Day at the Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen Street West, Toronto.

Participants are encouraged to bring shorts and a t-shirt and towel. Some extra outfits and towels will be provided for those without.

Hours:
Friday 5-8pm
Saturday 2-8pm
Sunday 2-8pm
Tuesday/Valentine's by appointment
To book an appointment email: torontolovesauna@gmail.com with your preferred times

This project was presented at FEAST 02, and was a winner of the FEAST Project Grant. Click here to view the original proposal, and congratulations to Shannon Linde and Edward Birnbaum on the successful realization of their project.

Walkable Planets -- Jode Roberts & Chris DePaul

At FEAST 03, Jode Roberts & Chris DePaul presented their proposal for "Making Christie Pits the Centre of the Universe," aka "Walkable Planets."

Their proposal is the creation of a walking scale model of the solar system, stretching almost two kilometres from Christie Pits to the Wychwood Artbarns. At the relative distance from the Sun (likely at a scale of one to five billion) along the route, there would be a station created for the Sun and each of the eight planets -- nine if you include poor old Pluto. Each station would artfully display: (1) the planet at proper scale, (2) brief details about the planet; and (3) directions to the next planet (e.g. 30 steps to Earth). The ambition is to have ten different local artists commissioned to develop planetary stations, ideally sculptural works of art that are permanently fixed and all-season ready.
